| Prerequisites: ASA Cruising Catamaran or equivalent
experience. General Description: Knowledge and skills supplemental
to the ASA Cruising Catamaran course. Topics include catamaran
specific sail trim techniques, heavy weather sailing, additional
anchoring/mooring techniques, and single engine boat handling.
Sailing Knowledge & Skills - Upon successful completion
the student will have demonstrated their understanding and
hands-on execution of:
|
| Catamaran Sail Trim Techniques |
| |
Traveler Use |
Explain and demonstrate proper use
of the traveler in main sail trimming. |
| |
Barberhauler |
Explain why a barberhauler is essential
to proper jib trim when reaching on a multihull and demonstrate
rigging and use. |
| |
Preventer |
Rig and use a preventer for safety
and sail trim. |
| |
Wing-on-Wing |
Sail a catamaran wing-on-wing and
rig for longer wing-on-wing runs. |
| |
Spinnaker Handling |
Explain spinnaker rigging on a catamaran
and why no spinnaker pole is necessary. Rig, sail, and douse
the spinnaker. |
| Anchoring, Mooring & Docking |
| |
Windage & Current |
Discuss the differences of how wind
and current may affect a catamaran versus a monohull. |
| |
Multiple Anchor Use |
Discuss and demonstrate options for
deploying multiple anchors on a catamaran including two anchors
off the bow and anchoring bow-and-stern. |
| |
Rolling-hitch |
Use a rolling hitch to attach bridle
lines to rope anchor rode. |
| |
Bow-to docking |
Demonstrate temporarily docking a
catamaran bow-to. |
| |
Spring-line use |
Discuss and demonstrate use of spring-lines
to maneuver a catamaran while docking. |
| |
Single-engine boat handling |
Discuss concepts and issues associated
with single-engine boat handling. Maneuver a catamaran in open
water, and in a confined space, under power using only one engine. |
| Heavy Weather & Offshore
Safety |
| |
Catamaran Stability |
Discuss stability characteristics
of cruising catamarans versus comparable monohulls. Discuss
lateral versus longitudinal stability and design factors that
affect multihull stability. |
| |
Catamaran Buoyancy |
Discuss why most cruising catamarans
are intrinsically buoyant and factors that effect buoyancy in
a catamaran. |
| |
Taking on water |
Discuss why a hull breach is a less
significant issue aboard a cruising catamaran than a comparable
monohull. |
| |
Capsize |
Discuss the reality versus myth of
cruising catamaran capsize. Discuss safety preparations for
a capsize event. |
| |
Surfing/Following Seas |
Discuss safety, speed control, and
helming considerations specific to a cruising catamaran when
surfing and/or in large following seas. |
| |
Wind Gusts |
Discuss tactics for dealing with
sudden, high-velocity gusts aboard catamarans. |
| |
Jack Lines |
Rig and use on a catamaran. |
| |
Speed Control |
Discuss the purpose, use, and rigging
of a drogue. Demonstrate rigging and use of a drogue. |
| |
Sea Anchor |
Discuss the purpose, use, and rigging
of a sea anchor. Demonstrate rigging and use. |
| |
Heaving-to |
Discuss appropriate situations for
use of this technique. Discuss factors that may affect how different
vessels heave-to and techniques for compensating for these differences.
Demonstrate heaving-to on a catamaran. |
| |
Lying Ahull |
Discuss lying ahull and considerations
specific to catamarans. |
